What is Arestin and Why Might You Need It?
If you've been diagnosed with gum disease, your dental provider may recommend Arestin® as part of your treatment. Arestin is a locally applied antibiotic (minocycline HCl 1mg) that targets the harmful bacteria deep below the gumline which is the area where gum infections start.
Why Arestin is an Effective Option
Gum disease (periodontitis) is a serious bacterial infection that affects the tissues and bone supporting your teeth. If left untreated, it can lead to:
• Gum recession
• Bone loss
• Tooth mobility
• Tooth loss
Arestin helps stop the infection by:
• Killing bacteria in deep gum pockets
• Reducing pocket depth
• Improving gum inflammation and bleeding
• Supporting natural healing and tissue health
How Arestin Works
In many cases, Arestin is used alongside scaling and root planing (SRP)-a deep cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from below the gums.
When used with SRP, clinical studies show that Arestin can:
• Reduce pocket depth 20% more than SRP alone
• Decrease bacteria by nearly 20% more
• Improve bleeding almost 2x more effectively
That said, Arestin can also be used before or apart from SRP when immediate infection control is needed your provider will determine the best timing for your specific case.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Arestin is quick and easy to apply. Your provider places the medication directly into the affected gum pockets. The antibiotic is delivered via microspheres, which slowly release the medication over time for continued bacteria control even after you leave the office.
Aftercare Tips for Arestin
To ensure the best results:

• Don't floss or use a water flosser around the treated area for 10 days

Is Arestin Safe for Me?
Arestin is FDA-approved and well-tolerated by most adult patients. However, it may not be suitable if you:
• Are allergic to tetracycline antibiotics

Be sure to tell your provider about any allergies, medications, or health concerns.
